Supporting Your Child's Online Education in Edgenuity

5 MINUTE READ • EDGENUITY SUPPORT

As the parent of an online learner, it can be challenging to know how best to support your child. At Grad Solutions, we know that parents are our biggest allies and can be critical to a student’s success in online learning. For a parent to be connected to what their student is doing online, they must understand how to use Edgenuity. This platform allows you to receive regular updates on your child’s progress via email or to access a parent portal on demand.

The Edgenuity Parent Portal

You can typically begin the process of setting this up during your child’s enrollment. If you do not have access to a parent portal and your child is under 18, you can contact us to get the process started. Keep in mind that you have to activate your account before logging in.

The parent portal is an essential resource that allows you to have a better understanding of how your student is spending their time online. One of the helpful tools on the portal is the attendance log. This log shows the date and time of each login and includes the activities they completed, the length of time they spent on each lesson. You can also view their grades on the activities, quizzes, and assignments through the portal.

Supporting Your Student

Parental support can look different, depending on the needs of the individual. You can help support your student by frequently checking in on their progress and knowing what they are currently working on. By avoiding judgemental language and working to understand what barriers stand in their way, you will be able to support your student through their challenges and encourage them when it comes to studying.

Another way to stay included in your students’ journey is to join the welcome call. We usually call a student within an hour of submitting the enrollment form. This conversation helps guide and encourage your student with the first steps of enrolling. This call is also where you, as a parent, can ask any unanswered questions that you may have. The more you are involved, the more accountable your child becomes.

In addition to joining the welcome call and frequently checking their progress, you can help your student create structure for their learning. By making a schedule and finding a dedicated space for studies, you are helping them lay the foundation for successful learning. Ideally, they should have an environment that is quiet and free from distractions. Whether they want to admit it or not, your teen needs some structure to be successful.

Critical Skills

Students in any learning environment must learn to advocate for themselves, communicate actively with their instructors and mentors, and make progress regularly. But we also can’t expect young adults to simply know how to do this.

As a parent to an online learner, you can support your child by teaching them how to communicate with their instructor or mentor. By creating a healthy line of communication between yourself, your student, and their mentor, you will better understand what is happening in your students’ education. You can also encourage them to log in and complete a lesson or two each day. Understand that this isn’t a wholly hands-off experience, and know that your involvement can be critical to your child’s success.

If you are a parent of a learner who is older than 18, please know that we want to provide as much support and encouragement as possible not only to your student but to yourself as well.  Being a parent of a student can be difficult but highly essential. Your student needs you and your support. Just remember that something as simple as asking your student how they are doing or simply encouraging them can help push them forward in their studies.
