Self-care for Teens and Why It Matters
Between work and school during the day, then texting and scrolling all night —and other *ahem* important matters, it’s not hard to imagine why some teens don’t find time for self-care.
Often, self-care is not a priority for a lot of reasons. We’re not here to judge, we’re only here to share what we know so that you can avoid complications that make life more challenging. There are other reasons to make self-care a priority too.
Spending time on self-care sets you up to succeed. When your mind, body, and spirit are well taken care of, you’re open to dreaming, thinking more deeply, acting more intentionally, and planning deliberately. You’ll be in a condition to better accomplish your goals.
What is self-care?
So, what is self-care? Self-care doesn’t necessarily mean bubble baths everyday, although that can be part of it!
Self-care refers to a set of deliberate activities that promote a person’s physical, mental, and emotional well-being. Self-care practices are highly individualized and based on a person’s needs and preferences, so they can vary widely from person to person.
Five areas of our lives that benefit from deliberate self-care include:
Physical self-care: Engaging in regular exercise, getting enough sleep, eating a balanced diet, practicing good hygiene (yep, this includes basics like showering, brushing your teeth, and flossing!), and attending regular medical check-ups. These are all things that contribute to good long-term health.
Emotional self-care: Identifying and expressing emotions, practicing self-compassion, engaging in activities that bring you joy, seeking support from loved ones, and participating in hobbies or creative outlets. This can lead to improved emotional regulation, reduced stress, and increased resilience —a critical trait for achieving your goals.
Mental self-care: Engaging in activities that stimulate the mind, such as reading, solving puzzles, learning new skills, practicing mindfulness or meditation. Setting boundaries can also help manage stress and challenges that come your way.
Social self-care: Nurturing healthy relationships, spending time with loved ones, seeking social support, and engaging in activities that foster a sense of belonging and connection. Building a support network and engaging in positive social activities can contribute to feelings of belonging, reduce feelings of isolation, and enhance overall well-being.
Spiritual self-care: Engaging in activities that align with personal values and beliefs, such as meditation, prayer, yoga, or spending time in nature.
A lack of care in these areas will impact parts of our lives, even when we don’t realize it. One area is academic performance. Self-care plays a significant role in academic success. Taking breaks to refresh, managing time effectively to reduce stress, and maintaining a healthy work-life balance can prevent burnout and enhance focus and productivity. By prioritizing self-care, teens can optimize their academic performance and reduce the negative effects of stress on their learning abilities.
Doing self-care empowers teenagers and adults to take responsibility for their well-being, develop healthy habits, and build a foundation for a balanced and fulfilling life. It promotes self-awareness, resilience, and encourages social connections —all of which are critical to navigating life's challenges.
